Today was ripe with small disasters and a looming but avoided large disaster. The little disasters:

  • We had to demo installing an SSL certificate on a Windows Server 2003 box that took forever to setup and configure properly
  • We had to get from the VMWare desktop machine to the VMWare server machine and that took some tinkering. Again, we needed to setup Reporting Services and SQL Server on this machine which it always happens that you forget to change something (e.g.., allowing remote connections, allowing SQL Server logins, etc.)
  • We had to stop to install each of the following at various times during the day
    • Adobe Acrobar Reader
    • Microsoft Excel
    • FireFox
    • A printer driver

None of the above were actually disasters but each of these interruptions conspired to slow us down immeaureably. All in all, considering what happened, we did well to get through two chapters (only one short of the goal of 3). And the averted big disaster was a fierce storm that was headed our way. We feared we would have to shut down for a few hours but that turned out not to be necessary. That was followed by about 5+ hours of Tornado watch. Currently, there is still a severe thunderstorm watch until 6:00 AM. Fun in the midwest.

Four chapters left to go. We will probably get through 3 of them Friday and do the last one (which I am still writing) Saturday morning.

Time for some sleep.
