Atlas Naming Game

Ok, Microsoft "Atlas" is now less than six months away, assuming it ships on schedule or with minimal slippage.  That means it's now time to play...

Name That Microsoft Product!

I'll be your host, and will get the ball rolling.  Note that some of these potential names are serious, and some are less so, but by all means, vote for your favorite by posting in the comments.  Also, some of these I'm listing are my own ideas, and some I'm borrowing from others, but I'm protecting their identities unless they want to claim the names publicly...

Also note that Framework and Foundation can pretty much be interchanged at will for most of these names.

Potential Product Names for Microsoft "Atlas":

Rich Web Programming Foundation - RWPF
Web Technology Framework - WTF (!)
AJAXX (aka let's just add an 'X' to the existing name to make it sound cooler)
Rich Language ASP Framework
Big ASP Rich Foundation - BARF
Active Client Pages - ACP

That's a good start - what do you think its "official" name should be?

Update - 11 September 2006:
ScottGu posted the official name today:

As part of releasing “Atlas”, we have also finally locked on an official set of product names that we will begin using moving forward. What was formerly called “Atlas” will now have a few names:

1) The client-side “Atlas” javascript library is going to be called the Microsoft AJAX Library. This will work with any browser, and also support any backend web server (read these blog posts to see how to run it on PHP and ColdFusion).

2) The server-side “Atlas” functionality that nicely integrates with ASP.NET will be called the ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions. As part of this change the tag prefix for the “Atlas” controls will change from <atlas:>to <asp:>. These controls will also be built-in to ASP.NET vNext.

3) The “Atlas” Control Toolkit today is a set of free, shared source controls and components that help you get the most value from the ASP.NET AJAX Extensions. Going forward, the name of the project will change to be the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit.

Thanks to everyone for participating in this fun thread and being a part of the AspAdvice community!

Forgive Wally--he's still new at this whole "acronym" thing.

"Active" is so 1998, so "ACP" is pretty much out.

AJAXX is out because it builds on the existing standard name. C'mon, this is Microsoft technology we're talking about. :)

It'll probably be one like RWPF, since "___ Foundation" is the latest Microsoft technology naming trend. How about, "Web Presentation Foundation"? It's Avalon for the web! Or "Web Client Foundation". Sure, both of those overload existing .NET 3.0 acronyms, but when has a difficult name stopped Microsoft marketing before? Have you googled ".net" recently?

Since current marketing seems to indicate that it must include both "Windows" and "Framework" even if it isn't only for windows (WCF on Mono?) or a Framework, thus I would guess WACF for Windows Asynchronous Client Framework). Here's hoping I don't win the prize either.

Perhaps calling it AJAX.Net wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Asynchronous JavaScript and XML in .net.

Rails calls it's AJAX controls "AJAX". So do all the developers who have been hacking together AJAX like functionality into .net for ages - why change it only for MS and .net? Remember there are plenty of 3rd party AJAX controls already out for .net - so it really would be just MS calling it something else!

Note:  Web 2.0 Framework...will it be 2.0 or 3.0?  Wow, MS could really take control and start calling the whole Web 2.0 thing Web 3.0!  How cool to tack on a framework to an existing technology and rev it as a major version number.  At least it would be consistent.

# re: Atlas Naming Game

I think that too descriptive names suck.

I'd go with any non-descriptive name, such as the ones MS uses as codenames (I loved Avalon and so on).
I believe that from the marketing point of view, non-descriptive catchy names ar far better than the others.
It's like dice.com and monster.com doesn't include "job" in their name.

But since MS are determined to use descriptive names, at least they should concentrate on the "what" and not on the "how".
so "Async XmlHttp Enabled Web Apps" (AXEWA ?) is bad, while "Dynamic Web Browsing" is better.

# re: Atlas Naming Game

I really like "Atlas". I agree with Ken Egozi regarding the non-descriptive product names.

I also believe the other option of building it straight into ASP.NET and not naming it at all is a good idea.

But if you want an add-on, call it 'ASP.NET - with added Rich Browser Experience!'

Then you could have boring Press Releases which say things like "Added RBE gives your ASP.NET apps extra sparkle!"

Oh or Rich Browsing System - and abbreviate it 'RiBS'. "Give your app RiBS". Yeah I'll shut up now.

# re: Atlas Naming Game

While I strongly believe that changing the name from Atlas (which has strong traction and searchability built up NOW) is a HORRIBLE, STUPID, ASININE idea... the best thing I can come up with goes like this:

Since we're NOT forced to use ASP.NET, it shouldn't reference that.

Since we're NOT really focused on the JavaScript (it's mostly just plumbing), it shouldn't reference that.

Since we're using JSON sometime and XML sometimes, is shouldn't reference that.

So, what it really is: Microsoft's AJAXish becomes (dropping the J for JavaSript, the X for [primarily] XML, and that middle-A)... we get A.  Then add the fact that it's intended to run on the client browser, you get C. Finally add the obligatory Microsoft "Foundation" and we've got:

A (sync)
C (lient)
F (oundation)

Now if you like, we could put a B for browser or a W for Web instead of the C for client... but that doesn't have the same ring.

# re: Atlas Naming Game

Browser Presentation Foundation (BPF) clearly...

I'd like to see some symmetry between this & WPF for 2 reasons:
a) ATLAS is not only an ajax layer, but architecturaly is a different model to normal asp.net apps...it promotes a *completely seperate* UI layer, and therefore, for anyone producing a layered app, is a seperate choice to WPF and should be named accordingly.
b) I feel that it's extremely important that MS promotes best architectural practice...for ASP.net this has happened, but not in a web 2.0 way... devs should be choosing different UI frameworks dependant upon their app requirements AND ensuring that their apps are developed in such a way that they can switch, something like this would clearly communicate this...
c) You'd get crossover between the 2 UI frameworks as devs can see that they can crossover if you promote synergies between them...
d) It'd help in the long run for the combined web/win framework that Brad A et al are working on ;-)

(BTW I realise that there are server components, but as far as I'm concered these are interfaces/adapters onto a business layer, and are part of the BPF framework...)

..more importantly, what the namespace going to be then?

System.Web. ...Async, Dynamic, UILayer ...?

Unfortunately "WC3 Presentation Foundation" has already been taken...

My 2c...

# re: Atlas Naming Game

Just call it ASP.NET 3.0. After all when we added masterpages we did not call it Themed ASP.NET - lets stick to WinForms, WPF and ASP and gradually merge everything to WPF!! :-)

# re: Atlas Naming Game

As already mentionned, Atlas is really a great name but since it's not gonna be kept, here are some of my suggestions:

- Advanced Web Presentation Components (AWPC)
- Asynchronous Web Technology (AWT)
- RichClient Web Presentation Library (RcWP)
- Reactive or any other adjective that may express the nature of responsiveness Atlas gives
- Even if Atlas works with any Web technology out there, I'm pretty sure MS would want to promote it as an extension to Asp.Net and I think it's a good idea, so may be:
RichClient Extensions for Asp.Net - RCEx for Asp.Net

That's it for now!

# re: Atlas Naming Game

My favorite is still Active Client Pages.  It should be noted, since many comments seem to think that Atlas is *just* an AJAX implementation, that there is a lot more baked into Atlas than just Asynch Javascript and XML.  It's a huge step forward for Javascript, period, and many of the Extenders available to enhance the behavior of existing controls do not talk to the server asynchronously, yet are a great part of the Atlas stack.

# re: Atlas Naming Game

Just to make it clear, I suggest renaming the whole Atlas to ASP.NET 3.0 together with any other ASP.NET innovation that is incorporated with Orcas. Just stop mentioning Atlas as a separate product but the AJAX support that comes with ASP.NET 3.0. As it was the case with the renaming of WinFX to .NET 3.0, it is a little inconsistent, but it helps keeping the brand space clean. Besides, when refering individually to the new AJAX like capabilities added, or when refering to the JavaScript based framework combined with other server technology (like PHP), you can still call it Atlas Framework.

You think I took it too seriously? :)

I don't know why they came up with Ajax in the first place, but if it's from the greek history of mythology, why not follow the tradition? The father of the great Ajax is named Telamon, so I think that would be a good suggestion.

# re: Atlas Naming Game

Yeah the name Atlas sucks.  I've got a better one.

Atlas.NET!

Seriously, you already have ASP.NET, and Atlas builds off of that, so it seems logical to give this one a .NET name too, despite the horrible confusion that results from having a TLD with the same name (just when we were starting to see a decrease in people who tried to go to www.command.com to get to their command prompt!).

AJAX.NET is obvious, but I dislike the term AJAX anyways, I coded an implementation of AJAX (using a tutorial to help) within minutes.  It doesn't deserve it's own name.  JavaScript.NET is an idea, except it's too broad of a name.  Plus Sun probably still sorta owns the name "JavaScript".

A new acronym, then. Dynamic Web Applications (DWA) .NET?

Web Applications Enhanced by JavaScript (or JScript) (WAEJ... a little hard to pronounce...) .NET

Im not too fond of this new trend of naming it a "foundation". Sounds like just another marketing hype like "active". i.e.: it will sound HOPELESSLY outdated very fast. Call it for what it is!

A framework for making web applications.

I think that name should contain all of the commmon attributes of AJAX...

To be short

A - Asynchronous (or AJAX)

W - Web

C - Communication

F - Framework

or

A W I(interaction) F.

but, I would like to initiate people at Microsoft to reconsider their decision to rename ATLAS. I think ATLAS is a quite good name.

X-Look (the Microsoft Product)

it remind the word Ajax for the "X" (that is also a signature for the MS products :-) for example X-Box, Windows Xp, Microsoft Flight Simulator X etc.) and the word "Look" for the Ajax's characteristics oriented to the web pages aspect or "looking to the future using Ajax technologies" :-)

# re: Atlas Naming Game

I think Atlas is very nice, and also like atlas.net or ajax.net, but such names whouldn't be very consistent with other .Net technologies, which refer in their names to a specific language (such as C#.net, VB.net, asp.net), while atlas is more suitably a cross-language (javascript, xml, html, asp - for integration - and so on) framework, or foundation, or library, based on AJAX and to be added to an existing IDE or Framework (as .Net) or an IDE itself, not a new, alternative or extending technology (as far as I've understood), so I think the above names aren't too good, as well as A#, A++, x.net, .ajax, ."something" and so on.

For the same reason I don't like much ACP - active client pages as opposit to active server pagese - since it sounds much like a new technology than an AJAX development tool. I like much more ACF (async client foundation) or BPF (browser presentation foundation), as defined and explained by their respective "authors", as libraries/plug-in's to be used inside other tecnologies/languages (like asp.net) or... what about:

-Developement Oriented CreaTOR for AJAX - DOCTOR AJAX

-or, referring to a .Net integration and to the main used languages, JAXforNET Foundation/Framework/Library

Of course, I still like Atlas as is. Ok, now I'll rest in peace, LOL!

Friday, August 25, 2006 10:26 AM by Alex

# re: Atlas Naming Game

Just another idea: someone above as suggested the presence of "live" in the final name (something like "live ajax foundation").

In such a case, possible names could be:

-Live (Client or Web) Applications Foundation or L(C or W)AF;

-Live (Web) Presentation Foundation or L(W)PF
