Blackberry Pearl 8130

blackberry_logoOn Friday I finally broke down and upgraded my aging Samsung i730 PDA phone. I've been with Verizon for some time and have been pretty happy with their coverage and such, and they were giving me there "new every two" deal of $100 off a new phone (with a 2 year contract...) so I figured what the heck. I'm probably the last person I know who hasn't at least tried a Blackberry, but now that I have this phone I'm really, really happy with it compared to the Samsung.

My Samsung i730

First, let me tell you about the things that were pain points (and some of the good things) with the Samsung. I bought it in October of 2005, and went through some pain to make it do some of the things I wanted it to do, like act as a modem for my laptop. Eventually, I did get everything to work, and made some (now very popular) blog entries showing how. I also used it for email using its built-in data plan, and that worked pretty well, I thought. It's basically a PDA with a phone bolted on, and has a full QWERTY keyboard (slide out) and a touch screen that works minimally with fingers but is really meant for the stylus it comes with. I immediately stuck an extended life batter on the thing, which made the total size and weight of the phone much bulkier than most. While it had a touch screen, it also had a lock switch that, once I got in the habit of using before pocketing the phone, made it much less likely I'd be calling anyone from my pocket.

Since the i730 was a PocketPC phone, I could write my own mobile apps for it in Visual Studio and deploy them to the phone. When I bought it, I thought about lots of neat little things I could do like this. I even did do one thing, once (think: Hello World), just to prove I could. But that was it. Another cool feature was that you could use Remote Desktop from your phone to log into a PC and (do whatever needed done in your 200x200 pixel window). That would be pretty cool if I were on the road and really needed to iisreset a server from my phone. But that never happened, either.

Some things I had grown to hate about my phone

For instance, there was no way to select all email messages and just delete them. And deleting them took forever, as in, about a second per message. Yes, that's forever if you have a few hundred messages per day. Nevermind that actually scrolling through them with the stylus requires you to drag the stylus from the first email down to the bottom of the screen, so it starts to scroll, and then keep on moving the stylus on the bottom of the screen so the scrolling will continue. I don't know how many hours of my life were spent doing this, but it got old.

Another issue is that I never could get Vista to recognize the stupid thing. So, it was great for contacts and calendar and all that cool stuff back in 2005-2006, but once I upgraded to Vista in November of 2006, the phone and my PC never spoke again. I could still use it as a modem, but even that got flaky and once I installed a USB bluetooth adapter for my laptop, the laptop decided that all DUN modem calls would default to the bluetooth modem (that I never had) even if the bluetooth usb device wasn't connected, so it became a major trial even to use the phone as a modem while traveling. I came very close to smashing the phone into many pieces after several frustrating bouts with the PC not recognizing it or claiming there was an error with my USB device.

And then came the Pearl

verizon_blackberry_pearl_bigSo of course I did some due diligence and asked my friends if they would recommend the Blackberry Pearl 8130 before I went out and got one. Mostly they ignored me, I think because not many of them had experience with this phone. Ironically, one of the mailing lists on which I asked the question did not get any answers until Friday afternoon after I'd just bought the 8130, and in that case three different people all said the Blackberry Curve was the *** and that anyone who had the Pearl wished they had a Curve. Lame. On the plus side, the Curve is apparently not carried by Verizon, so there was no point in my feeling bad about a phone that my carrier didn't offer.

So I got the 8130, set up email accounts on it, sync'd it with my laptop, and used it as a modem all without any hiccups. They modem works great and easily. The sync is simple. And oh my god the email is so much better than on the PocketPC. Should I be surprised? I've only been told for years that Blackberry is awesome when it comes to checking email - now I've seen it firsthand. One feature I love - Delete All Prior. No more scrolling forever! W00t!

Ok, so apart from things working as they always should have, the phone is extremely lightweight and more comfortable to carry and to use. The pearl trackball is extremely easy to use one handed. The actual keys make dialing easier than the touch screen of the i730 that usually required me to use the stylus to avoid mis-typing numbers. And it comes with a full-blown audio jack for stereo headphones and I picked up a 2GB micro-SD card for about $35 with the phone. I haven't used the headphones yet (I'm sure it plays music fine through them) but you can actually just play music on the phone and the volume and quality are incredible (for a 3oz phone, mind you - it's not a home theater solution). The phone's sound is at least comparable to my laptop speakers!

It doesn't have a full QWERTY keyboard but is has SureType software that basically figures out what you're going for and auto-completes (or lets you select from several options) as you type. At first I wasn't too sure about it, and would keep on hitting the delete key until it got each letter correct as I typed it. But then I decided to just "use the force" and trust the thing, ignoring the letters it was showing and continuing to type each word. By the time you get to the third or fourth character of a word, it's picked the right one and you can just press the trackball to complete it. It works very well for known words, the only time I am still finding that I need to type each character correctly as I go is for non-words like email addresses, and since I've sync'd my outlook address book with the phone, it's not often I'm entering in new addresses.

The phone will also let you use any MP3 as a ringtone, so I figured out how to do that with Audacity (writeup to come) and now have my first ever custom ringtone to annoy people with.

One thing I haven't figured out yet with the phone is the GPS - it says it has one but I haven't found any menus or apps that use it. I think it's supposed to "just work" with Blackberry Maps or Google Maps or somesuch, but again, haven't gone there yet. Maybe this week at MIX I'll play with it some more.

PS - anyone looking for an i730 for cheap, email me. After my glowing review, who wouldn't want it?

I just recently updated my cellphone to 21st century technology, going for the T-Mobile Shadow

http://www.t-mobileshadow.com/

I don't think this would suit your massive email needs, but web surfing is quite enjoyable. The Pearl was my runner-up choice. Predictive text works very well with the 20-key Quasi-Qwerty Keyboard. As you said, you have to "go with the force" and just type away.

I forgot to ask. How much is the verizon data package? T-Mobile offers unlimited data (email, web) for $20/month.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

Verizon is expensive - $30 for unlimited. The other thing I've learned since this post that pisses me off is that Verizon cripples the GPS so that it only works with their $10/month navigation service. So, even though the phone comes with BlackBerry Maps preinstalled, which is supposed to work with the internal GPS, the greedy bastards at Verizon have prevented this feature of the phone from working properly.

Finally you got the BB bug. I migrated from a Treo to the Curve (ATT) and now I understand why it is called the Crackberry.

My wife had the Pearl, it is sleeker, lower res camera etc. But the Curve is strangely a little lighter and the QWERTY keyboard actually is very comfortable. I just wish ATT would have released the 3G model before I got mine. The edge network is slow and not worth the $30/month.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

I think it is a fairly new promotion/deal, but if you pick a premium plan (starts @ $80/mo), all data, VCast and VZnavigator is included in your monthly rate. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Thanks for your review, I have had the Treo 650 for a few years now, and I think after reading this, I will be picking up the Pearl tomorrow.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

Hi Yawl, I just got mine too. At first I thought, "It's going back." I just didn't jive with it. But the world doesn't just stop until I get another phone, hence I was forced to have to use this one until I chose another phone, and it was shipped. In the meantime..... I began understanding different components. The Email and text all in one place alerting me quietly to a new message or incoming email, I assigned each email & text it's own ring-tone, so I knew if it was the family email, work email, or one of my chatty text friends.

"SOLD."

If the email is works that fabulously, what must some of the other apps do?

Well, I dunno yet. In fact the reason I ended up here on your page is because I googled the words...

"how do I delete all messages at once blackberry 8130" Pretty funny huh? I have yet to figure it out.

I also haven't uploaded the Verizon software discs yet, because right off the bat it asks something about which desktop software would I like to use, and lists about 15-20 different interfaces, all individualised for what kind of services you might use, `er, I think, oh and languages.

I have yet to figure out how to get some new ringtones, I'm using the preloaded Polytones (Say that one ten times fast) But I really am keeping the faith. The phone itself is a sexy little thing, I love the camera and the light sensor and adjustment. I love how you can record LONG notes to yourself, and pause. Like your entire grocery list, I also love that it allows you to videotape more than 30 seconds of video.

Funny, the phone I used prior to this? Was an N.V.

But I feel a bit more envied now, being the first to reply to our office group emails & pod-casts.

I'll let you know as I discover more (If you care)

Alas, in the meantime, can someone explain that "Multi-Message-Delete?" My manicure is suffering, and I could spend more time fidgeting around with all the new features, if I wasn't deleting 300 messages & SMS's, one by one. Those "Seconds," really do add up!

Thanks ever so-

Pearl Unfurl

AKA Give it a Whirl Pearl

PS, when you get some of those apps off the ground, gimme gimme gimme!

Thinking of getting an 8130, but I'd like to know if Mologogo works with it. Anybody?

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

To delete multiple messages, select a date in the message view, and click menu. Then click 'delete prior'. It took me forever to figure it out too.

As for ringtones, just email yourself some mp3s. Not too many, unless you have an sd card. Of course if that's the case, just load them on there.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

The blackberry is easy to delete messages - it was the Samsung where it sucked. And MP3 ringtones are a breeze with the Blackberry as well - but again not something that worked with the Samsung i730.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

I brought my Blackberry Pearl 8130 in Dec of 2007.

Email works great and I signed up for TELENAV as the preferred Alltel GPS provider.

TeleNav is $9.95 per month and would be worth it if Telenav keep its servers and network up for more than 2 hours a day. Seriously, I have had only 3 days in the month of February that Telenav was working.

You call their support and they run you through the same BS every time., checking over all the settings. Then the final answer is it's Alltel's fault and not theirs. Go to Alltel and they tell you it's Telenav. The finger pointing is so annoying. I only have one finger to point to Telenav.

Most of the time you can not sync with their servers so all the contacts you maintain on their website are not accessible on the handset. Like I want to enter dozens of contacts every day by typing on the handset!

So, don't consider Telenav for now, as the are as lost as we are without our GPS.

On the BB Pearl, How do you select all e-mail messages and delete at once? I've been trying for a month to figure it out and I need some direction! Thanks :-)

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

@MD - Use the trackball to scroll all the way to the top of your messages. You should be on today's date. Hit the Menu button. Move up one item - Delete All Previous. Click. Move up one item - Delete. Done.

Thanks Steve. I've been trying to figure this out for weeks now! Now how about these ring tones? I've read a couple of posts on the message board noting it's easy to make an mp3 ring tone on these phones. How can I email myself an mp3 and then make it a ring tone? Got an easy answer for that? :-) Thanks a bunch.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

@MD - I used this to do it. It was totally easy. I copied the file to the phone using my USB cable, not email.

How do you sync your email messages? I have the desktop manager, but can't select reconcile now. Do I have to delete all of my messages on the blackberry everyday instead of doing it on the desktop and just syncing?

Thanks!

@sam: I had the same experience once and had to do the same thing. The phone responded until I tried to use it as a phone (funny idea, that), then it would lock up. I could power it off, power it on, use it for anything but phone, then if I hit the phone, it would freeze. Finally took out the battery and that managed to reset it. So far it's only happened one time, though.

I just got a pearl, and i just wanted to throw out there that i found something cool on the 8130 pearl. I have an AUX. port in my cd player and if you look on the left side of the pearl it does as well. I had a AUX. cord at home that fit in the phone and the cd played. And could listen to music. But when i hit a buttom on mistake while doin that it started to make a call and the person on the other end answered and it came over my speakers in my car like ON-STAR. If you have a AUX. jack in your cd player try it out!!!!

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

Just got my "pink" pearl 8130 last week. Love, love, love it! I have my AOL e-mail on it, my Yahoo e-mail on it and, of course, my work e-mail too. :) It was a breeze setting up. And, putting MP3's on the phone are easy guys and gals! I ordered the new little San Disk 8GB microSDHC card and it comes with a card reader that plugs into your USB on your laptop or desktop. This makes things really sweet. All I do is download the MP3s I want on to my laptop, then I drag them from the directory they are in to the drive that is housing my card reader and that is it. Once I have dragged and dropped all the MP3s I want then I take my 8GB microSDHC card out of the card reader and put it back in my blackberry pearl. Voila! That is it. The pearl recognizes the MP3s immediately. I just go to media and then music on my phone and all my songs are listed there.

Regarding ringtones in your e-mail on your blackberry. All you need to do is open the e-mail with the ringtone attached and then click on the menu button. You should see an option to save the ringtone. This works for pictures too.

Have fun with your new bb pearls! I know I am!

@alison,

I haven't had that issue but I did call some people while I was at MIX in Las Vegas and it was quite late on Eastern Time because the phone was in my pocket and not locked (I lock it religiously now). Maybe it's sending things from your pocket or purse or whatever. Do the emails tend to happen when you would be out and about, or completely at random like while you would be sleeping?

Pear 2 8130 OS v4.3.0.71 on Sprint PCS CDMA Network

Hi Scott,

actually I was having the same problem and believe I might have found the solution as this appears to have remedied the problem on my Pearl 2.

In "options/SMS Text" there is option to set the previous messages count saved and I changed this to maximum of 50 and save on exit.

also there is an option to set the amount of time that received messages are saved in:

"Messages/MenuKey/Options/General Options"

scrool to the bottom and ensure this is set to your desired time.

I average around 11mb of free space "Options/Status" on the device memory total available of 64mb and was having this happen every other day until I set the SMS Text Options to 50.

Also it is important to note that the Pearl OS is designed to auto delete messages when the available device memory is low to prevent device lockup and failure. Unfortunatley nobody let the users know this up-front, and there are no pop-ups on the phone warning about this possibillity.

What where the R.esearch I.n M.otion folks thinking about when they failed to give these smartphones more memory is beyond me considering the next to nothing cost for memory bought in enourmous bulk one has to wonder why this oversite happened.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

Hi,

Well it appears that was not the answer to the problem. the following is direct from the 8130 manual.

:Manul Quote:

Some messages no longer appear on my device

If your BlackBerry® device memory is full, your device deletes the oldest messages from a message list. Your device does not delete saved messages.

If wireless email reconciliation is turned on, and, in the message options, the Delete On field is set to Mailbox & Handheld, email messages

that you delete in the email application on your computer are also deleted from your device.

:End Manul Quote:

Ok so I think this time I have a handle on what is happening.

E-mail reconciliation will interact with the BIS registered e-mail accounts being used on a BB and if a users mail messages are viewed via Outlook for example or other mail browser on the pc or laptop and they are removed from the mail server when downloaded to the pc or laptop(delete messages from server is the default for outlook for example), the same messages will be deleted on the device, when the BIS updates the mail status from the registered mail server(s) to the BB.

This update appears to not happen at the same moment and looks like it can take hours for the BIS registered e-mail accounts to update to the current status on the mail accounts server. Thus why many of us are wondering where they went and not realizing that we viewed them hours ago, and they where automatically removed from the mail server when the user viewed them.

I hope this helps any who are having this issue and I will report back here within a day or two after a couple of e-mail send and delete tests to confirm the assessment.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

I love my new phone. I agree at first it was a bit overwhelming. I mean it has so much to it. I was taking pictures like crazy and filled my memory up so I had to connect it to the laptop to download them onto there. I changed my ringtone a couple times it has a lot of preloaded tones, alarms etc. but I just purchased the memory card for $15 dollars!! at wal-mart. GUYS $15 in comparison to what the $50 that verizon charges for them. You can use your MP3's as a ringtone and I just used the USB to connect my phone to the laptop and using the media manager that came with the phone (software) I downloaded or uploaded (?) my songs to my phone and a few videos and pictures. I guess it's adios to my Ipod. You can delete several emails instead of one by one and sometimes it beats my laptop at informing me that I have a new e-mail. You can delete the email from the blackberry and/or your desktop as well. You can reply you can forward, you have your contacts, it memorizes your information and recognizes it for next time. The volume part was tricky for me at first...it was very low and I had it set on "Loud" still, it was low and I was playing on it all day until I figured it out (just in time, I was planning on taking it back because there was no way I could hear it...and after turning everything I knew to loud or high I had almost given up). You can assign ringtones or mp3 tones to different people different alarms, the calendar, text messages, e-mail messages, there's just so much. Every thing has its own ringtone or music. What else can I say, it has bluetooth, it has maps on there (I didn't pay extra for it), it has speaker, headset (sounds great), calendar, recorder, notepad, etc. etc. I had the cheapest phone from Verizon...and I waited for the $100 discount and the mother's day sale and paid actually maybe $50 after the sale and rebate etc. and $15 for the memory card. WAL-MART people!!!... in the camera section not the one in the entertainment sections (those are the expensive ones). Anyways I love my phone I don't ask for much and this phone gave me what I wanted, and stuff I didn't need but will definetely use ha ha!! I got the the pink one but the blue is to die for as well! Enjoy!

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

Hey everyone,

Great help with the comments thus far, but I had a question that I'd like some opinions on. I em eligible for Verizon's New Every Two, and I'm looking at upgrading to my first smartphone. I can get either the silver Blackberry Pearl 8130 or the Motorola MOTO Q 9c for the same price... And I can't decide which I want.

From all I've heard, the Blackberry is a lot more reliable, and the trackwheel sounds really nice. The size is also a plus. However, the Suretype keyboard leaves me a little iffy. On the other hand, the MOTO Q 9c is said to be less reliable, but since it's running Windows Mobile 6, there's a lot of free software developed for it (such as Skype for mobile... which would be handy since my girlfriend is in Ireland for the summer and the only communication we have is with Skype), plus it has a full QWERTY keyboard. Both can use MP3's as ringtones, so that's a moot point.

Since a lot of you seem to know more about this sort of thing than me, what are your opinions?

Tuesday, July 08, 2008 1:29 PM by Dylan

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

I was unsure about the Suretype keyboard but 95% of the time it gets whatever i'm trying to type correct and saves me time. The other 5% it's quite annoying, but I'd say on the whole I like the slim phone enough to do without the full keyboard.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

i got my blackberry pearl 8130 on the telus plan ($30/mo), and it's gives me the Crackberry affliction.

tho the C-M2 battery is the shits.

I am gonna get the extended life battery for $25 for sure, cos using EVDO and the camera just limits the number of hours of use to 300 minutes.

That is because the battery is only a 900mAH but the smartphone is so greedy for power it needs the 1900mAH extended life battery.

This phone is so power hungry, the alkaline recharger kit for $9.95 is not a good buy because it just makes the battery go flat faster!

You'd need the Motorola recharger with the NiMH batteries in it with the proper USB submini jack.

Overall, the Blackberry is a fun phone to use.

Tho I have to change Security Options from Options cos the Memory Cleaning option needs to be Enabled. Otherwise, the phone gets to 0 Bytes free of memory, and slows right now.

With Memory Cleaning enabled, the phone will eventually soft boot and change Memory Cleaning to Disabled.

My first 8130 deleted all my text msgs and call logs after about 14 days. When someone would call, it would not save it in the call log. When someone would txt msg then I could not see the txt. Did anyone else have this problem or have any feedback on it? I am on my second Pearl, but what to know if I am going to have the same problem with this one.

Can this phone be set to use hot spot wireless access instead of carriers? Also, is this a sim card phone; can they be change? I travel frequently to overseas; my current phone let me change sim cards to connect to overseas networks... I would love to have the features offered by this blackberry overseas, connecting thru wireless hot spots.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

I had the problem with my blackberry pearl deleting my texts/calls and when I went into the provider they told me it was because I wasn't closing out my applications the right way. If you just hit end it doesn't actually close the stuff out, like the camera, media player etc... if you hit the blackberry button twice and go to switch application, it shows what you have open, go into each one and hit the blackberry button then scroll down to close. There are 5 things that can't be closed, messages, home, internet, bb msnger, and call log. The rest shouldn't be open, the only other thing I have open other than those always is my yahoo msnger. Hope that helps!

Natasha, that was very helpful, I didn't know that. I am a very new blackberry 8130 user and I came to this site because none of my texts were being saved, in fact, I stopped receiving texts. It seems from these earlier posts that maybe I don't have enough memory. However, I just purchased this phone a week ago. I haven't synched it to my computer or anything. How can it be that I don't have enough memory? Does anyone know how I can remove items that may be eating up my memory? I closed out of applications as mentioned above, but I don't know what seems to be monopolizing the system. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

I was able to find the answer to my own question! Upon closer inspection of my memory I discovered that I had no memory available. So, I scrutinized every application and found that facebook was eating up a ton of memory. I truly did not need it so I deleted the application and solved my space issue. I hope this helps anyone else who may have been having the same problem.

Anissa T

I had the same problem a few weeks after I got my phone. What I did was I turned off my phone, took out the battery for a few seconds, put it back in and turned it on, which reset my phone. I don't remember if they were deleted immediately after that, but they did delete over time. Hope this helps!

For anyone wanting "gps" without paying for the service, google maps works excellent on this phone. Also, you can turn SureType off, I'm not a very big fan of it. Any app that you are typing in your can press the blackberry button and "Enable MultiTap".

Does anyone know how to use Bluetooth to use the Blackberry as a modem for a MacBook Pro with Leopard OS 10.5.4?? This has been such a pain for me to figure out no one at Alltel, Mac, or Blackberry seems to know how - but claim there is a way.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

As of early December 08, Verizon has unblocked the GPS receiver and BB Maps will now pick up satellites and actually show you GPS data. You must go into options and enable GPS (location on) and tell the Maps app to use it - for it to work.

It is my understanding that at this time however, it only works with BB Maps and Google is still using a method to point your location by triangulating from cell towers - which is not so accurate.

# re: Blackberry Pearl 8130

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me. I got a Blackberry Pearl 8130 from a friend. It was an Alltell contract. I also have Alltell so I figured it would not be a problem. I bought the phone and took it to Alltell to get it transferred over to my new number, but they said because my friend owed money on their account I could not get the phone transferred to my account. Even though the phone was bought and paid for, because of them owing a past due bill, they would not release the phone from their account. Since I payed good money for the phone and they will not take the phone back, I am now stuck just trying to see if anyone knows how to unlock the phone to where I will be able to use it and get it on my account. Thank you for anyone that might can help.

Amanda, If you bought that phone from a friend they should pay the bill or give you your money back. Otherwise, take them to small claims court.
