  • Featured project: Visual C++ MFC wrapper for TX Text Control

An enthusiastic user of TX Text Control recently published an open source project that provides a Microsoft CWnd-based wrapper for TX Text Control ActiveX 15.1.

Generally, ActiveX controls can be easily imported into MFC-based projects, but these wrappers around ActiveX controls are incomplete. This project contains wrappers for the TXTextControl, TXButtonBar, TXRulerBar and TXStatusBar. The TXWrapper class itself acts like a parent window for the TX Text Control components. Additionally, some helper classes and a sample application is part of the project.

If you plan to use TX Text Control ActiveX in a Visual C++ MFC project, I can really recommend this wrapper. It is all you need to start a TX Text Control word processing application using VC++.

Please visit the project's website on SourceForge to learn more about the wrapper or to download the files. All further contributions are welcome.

  • LiveDocx - Template-based document creation

LiveDocx allows developers to create word processing documents by combining user-defined Microsoft Word templates with data from disparate data sources, such as XML files and databases. It is typically used to create professional, print-ready word processing documents in DOCX, DOC, RTF and PDF.

LiveDocx is a Web Service that can be easily integrated into any web application without installing or configuring any software on your server. Currently, the following programming languages are supported:

    - ASP.NET
    - PHP

As LiveDocx is strictly based on open standards, it is simple to add support for more programming languages. As long as SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is available on the client-side system, LiveDocx runs on all operating systems and in all programming languages.

    Typical Applications:

Using LiveDocx, developers can merge data with Microsoft Word templates into one print-ready, word processing document.

For example, the sales department of an enterprise can access constantly fluctuating sales data that is stored in a centralized location and combine it with a richly formatted template to programmatically produce a set of sales reports. The resulting word processing documents can be sent by e-mail, fax or snail mail to their recipients.

Similarly, telephone companies can deploy LiveDocx to generate customer invoices. All connection information and billing information is stored in one centralized customer database. Selected data is assigned to LiveDocx and combined with a standardized template to produce the resulting invoice.

    Summary

    - Populate templates with data from any data source (DB, XML, CSV).
    - Build mail merge or mass-mail applications.
    - Generate customized documents on-the-fly with constantly changing data.
    - Generate print ready PDF documents, with multiple security settings.
    - Share your created documents or
    - Integrate them into your web site using the LiveDocx widget.

Advantages of the LiveDocx Client/Server Architecture

As LiveDocx reduces document generation to the absolute lowest common denominator, its deployment also lowers the total cost of document creation. Developers no longer need to worry about installing and maintaining 3rd party tools or applications on their servers. They simply call LiveDocx over the Internet, using a very simple API.

Typically, printer drivers, fonts and licenses need to be installed, maintained and administered when programmatically generating word processing documents on a server. Using LiveDocx, this load is shifted from the developer to a team of professional server administrators.

Developers are thus free to concentrate on building world-class applications and not be hassled by the mundane work associated with sever administration.

Thanks to its modulate and open architecture, LiveDocx can be easily integrated into existing work flow systems, using most programming languages.

    Summary

    - Deploy in a multi-programing language environment.
    - Substantially reduce server load and consequently total cost of ownership (TCO).
    - Simple integration into existing systems.
    - Decrease server maintenance.

  • Improved PDF import functionality in TX Text Control 15.1

In version 15.0, TX Text Control released the first PDF import filter. The idea was to provide the functionality to import PDF documents and do further processing on such documents. The first version was able to extract the text from PDF files. Even paragraphs were recognized and the text frame mode was able to generate good looking documents.

If you don't know the PDF format in detail, you might wonder why it is so tricky to load this format. To understand this, imagine a PDF document like a real executable file in contrast to the source code.

An RTF document is like the source code. You can open it easily in a text editor and if you understand RTF tags, you can make changes to the document.

Whereas the PDF document can be compared to the true Win32 EXE which can't be easily decompiled. To understand what the EXE does or how it is implemented, you need to reverse engineer the executable. The same is valid for PDF documents: The Adobe PDF format is a low-level output format and was designed to be printed - not to be imported again. In most cases it contains only geometrical information about the single characters. You have to calculate which characters belong to a sentence, a paragraph or a text frame.

    So, what has been improved?

Aside from new image formats that are now supported, the most impressive part is the grouping of created text frames. Have a look at a typical PDF page:

    Adobe PDF Document

It consists of a heading, an introduction text and a table with 3 columns. The following screenshots show the results from version 15.0 in comparison to version 15.1:

TX Text Control 15.0TX Text Control 15.1

As you can see in the 1. screenshot, all text areas are inserted as single text frames to realize the distances between the paragraphs. The problem with this is that you can't extract the text from all of these frames using copy and paste. With version 15.1 (2. screenshot), all text frames are grouped into one large frame and the distances are realized using paragraph distances, specific line spacing and indents.

The tabular data in the PDF is now realized using tab positions and not single text frames which makes the text readable and reusable. The following illustration shows the same document in TX Text Control 15.1 with visible control characters where the line spacing and tab positions are highlighted:

  • Creating mail merge templates including a preview functionality

Creating mail merge templates including a preview functionality

    --><br>
Because of the new FieldAdapter class, MS Word compatible merge fields can be inserted easily into a document. Using the Windows Forms version of TX Text Control, a template designer can be easily built and deployed royalty-free.

In the shipped samples, TX Text Control demonstrates how to create templates by inserting the fields directly using the ApplicationField collection. This article describes how to create templates using the adapter fields. Additionally, it shows how to preview the template with the real data coming from a database.

This approach follows the same logic of creating a template like the shipped 'closed source' TX Template Designer:

    - Open a database
    - Select a table
    - Insert fields

    Details:

    1. First, click on Open Database... and browse for an XML database file. A sample file comes with this project. If the XML database could be loaded properly, the contained tables are listed in the first combobox.

    2. Select one of the listed tables. All column names will be added to the items of the second combobox.

    3. The column names are used as field names of the inserted merge fields. If an item is selected, click Add field to insert the merge field into the document.

    4. The loaded database is used to get the possible fields that can be used in the template. Additionally, the contained data rows can be used to preview the merged document. Click on Preview to enable the preview functionality.

Using the arrow buttons, it is possible to navigate through the data rows of the current table to preview all rows. You are able to use this nice approach as your basis for your own template designer.

Download the project and sample database file here (Visual Studio 2008 and at least a TX Text Control .NET 15.0 trial version is required):
