Effectively Use the Lists

Using Rules and Folders to Effectively Manage List Mail

There is a lot more to effectively using the ASPAlliance lists than just subscribing and maybe asking or answering a question or two. If you subscribe to many lists or even a couple of the heavy traffic lists then you probably have a difficult time managing the many emails you are receiving each day.

Well, Outlook Express 4/5, Outlook 98/2000/2002, and Eudora all allow you to create personal folders to store your mail as well as a mechanism called 'rules'. Personal folders are exactly what it sounds like - user created folders in your email client. 'Rules', on the other hand, are actions that govern how your email client processes your email.

Switch your default message format to text

HTML email is nice for sending out pretty corporate emails. HTML email just makes list message sizes really large which increases our bandwidth usage and causes problems for those of us who do not have a broadband connection. So, while it is not a requirement, we would love it if everyone would switch their default (or at least switch it for list email) message format to Text. This page has complete instructions for making this change using the following email clients AOL, Eudora 4/5, Netscape, Outlook 97/98/2000/2002, and Pegasus.

Use proper list etiquette

As with most online interaction, there is a proper etiquette observed by most law abiding netizens. Here on the ASPAlliance lists we would like you  (a list member) to follow the etiquette outline on this page.
